WHEN I MET LADY GROOVE
I was 9 years old, we were on the highway, traveling out of state…..me & my parents……
Dad always had recorded cassette tapes for the road…..Mom had cheeseburgers wrapped up in foil…..
We’re 2-3 hours in….and then Donald Byrd’s FLIGHT TIME came on….but i was still immersed in the last song,
Marvin Gaye’s “T” Plays It Cool….
Another family in a station wagon pulled up alongside of us, the man & his wife looked over at us smiling & nodding…..Mom & Dad smiled back…….and then the man gave Dad the Black Power sign, and Dad proudly returned the gesture……….
from there they pressed on……
Right at that moment, the 1st break kicked in on FLIGHT TIME……
The guitar, then the horn, with the Bassline in the background holding it all together…….
And then came the breakdown…….and I fell in……like it was quicksand…..
The song was a part of me now……and this was
so brand new to me…….
That moment changed the way I listen to music….
That was the day I found out what it’s like to be captured…..
After that day, my Dad would allow me to help him
choose songs for his traveling tapes…….
My Dad knew I was onto something …….but I didn’t know…..
Through the years on into adulthood, I strayed away
from that discovery…..
But, in time I found it, and then I found out that she was a woman …..because that day on the road, I didn’t realize she was jazzy, powerful, seductive, & IN FULL CONTROL…..
I’m damn proud to share her…….and you can rest assured,
I will never leave her again….
